Independent Interpreters
I’ve met several interpreters in the Philadelphia area who work independently, not through one of the above interpreting referral agencies. Independent interpreters will generally charge less because they don’t have the overhead and staff costs of the relay services. However if problems come up, and an interpreter can’t make the appointment, relay services will work to look for and send another interpreter. An independent interpreter may try to do this, but it sometimes isn’t possible. I have a list of interepreters (and if you’re interpreter and want on my list, let me know), and am willing to work with medical providers to determine what works best for them.
